Decatur Central High School Students Inducted into the National Technical Honor Society

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, Decatur Central High School inducted students into their newly established chapter of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). Sponsored by teacher, Mr. Robert Bowling, the National Technical Honor Society coordinates well with Decatur Central High School’s focus on graduation career pathways. According to its website, “The National Technical Honor Society is an educational non-profit that exists to honor, recognize, and empower students and teachers in Career & Technical Education” (https://nths.org/).

In order to qualify for induction into the NTHS, students must be a junior or senior, enrolled in a career pathway, and earn a 3.2% GPA in their pathway and at least a 2.7% GPA overall. Students also must obtain a recommendation from one of their teachers and cannot have any disciplinary infractions. The students inducted at DCHS are from a variety of career pathways including Criminal Justice, Marketing, Bio-Medical, Engineering, and Construction. Mr. Tom Wachnicki, Principal, expressed his pride in the work these students have accomplished in their career pathways, stating, “This is where formal education meets the real world.”

Membership in the National Technical Honor Society is not only a distinguished recognition, but is also important for students because it provides scholarship opportunities, recognition at graduation for academic excellence in their chosen pathway, and recognition for future employers on resumes. Mr. Bowling shared, “I am extremely proud of these students for their hard work. This group is unique since this is the first induction of students of the NTHS at DCHS. I am excited for how this organization will help these students in the future with scholarships and job placement. These students should be commended for their academic achievement and I am proud to be their chapter advisor.”
