The Kindness Club at Blue Academy

Aesop once said, “No act of kindness, ho matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Inspired to make a difference in their school community, teachers Mrs. Erin Clark and Mrs. Samantha Parker at the Blue Academy, began the “Kindness Club” last year.  The purpose of this group of students in grades 4-6 is simply this: make a difference in the school and in the world by spreading kindness. Mrs. Clark shared her motivation to start the club: “I just feel like so many positive kids in class wanted to make a difference, and saw the need to lead them.” Mrs. Parker explained that she previously sponsored a “Kindness Rocks” project at the school and, “I saw a natural fit with Mrs. Clark's club. We combined ideas and perspectives to begin the Kindness Club.”

So what does the “Kindness Club” do? They have implemented a variety of activities and projects throughout the school year including creation of videos to motivate students for testing, treat bags for students, weekly kindness quotes for the school announcements, and staff appreciation notes. They also painted rocks with inspiring messages and placed them around the school for students and staff to find. As the club grew in student participants, another teacher, Ms. Alainey Kovacs, came on board. Ms. Kovacs stated, “I love how the fun things we do promote thinking and reflection on how to be kind.”  Mia, a student club member said, “My favorite project was the cards we made for custodians. They do a lot of work to keep our school clean.” Another student, Testimony, said, “My favorite part is when we help others.”

What does kindness mean to you?

A visit to a club session back in April showcased the impactful student discussions that take place. In recognition of Earth Day, the students brainstormed answers to tough questions such as, “Why is it important to be kind to our planet?” and “How can you be kind to the earth?” Students were all able to write their input and completed a gallery walk to read ideas from each other. The session ended with each student making an Earth Day Pledge and a dot painting illustrating how they can help the earth.
