At the School Board Meeting on August 22, 2022, Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Stephanie Hofer, announced that Blue Academy, Gold Academy, Stephen Decatur Elementary, Valley Mills Elementary, and West Newton Elementary have been named 2021-2022 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Launch Distinguished Schools.  These schools are among the 282 PLTW Launch programs across the country to receive recognition this year.  The Distinguished program recognition celebrates schools committed to helping students own their education by increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in PLTW programs.  These schools empower their students to unlock their potential by developing the in-demand, real-world knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in life beyond the classroom.  Here in MSD of Decatur Township, implementation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) classes in all elementary schools has provided an avenue for PLTW implementation to thrive.  Dr. Hofer recognized Rebecca Bersani, Lead STEAM Teacher, for leading and mentoring her colleagues through PLTW implementation.  Also recognized at the board meeting were STEAM teachers Shawn Powers (Blue Academy/West Newton), Helen Harris (Stephen Decatur), Andy Riester (Gold Academy), Carla Monical (Valley Mills), and Ryan Stroud (West Newton).  It was noted that Lynwood Elementary also is home to a new STEAM class with teacher, Derick Cale, for this current school year.  We are Decatur Proud of the engagement and learning our STEAM Teachers facilitate with students each day!
