Indianapolis – September 4, 2015…  Arts for Learning nominee Tracey Suchy received the Larry Hurt Excellence in Arts Education ARTI Awards during The Arts Council of Indianapolis Start with Art Luncheon on September 4th. Suchy is the art teacher at West Newton Elementary (WNE) in the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township and a long-time partner of Arts for Learning.

Arts for Learning nominated Suchy for the arts educator award which is given “For exemplary service, creativity, and passion in developing and education young minds through the arts in the k-12 school system.”

As a champion for the art at WNE, Suchy works with Arts for Learning to bring in numerous workshops, residences and performances to her classroom. In recent years she organized a series of grade-level residences in photography and video-game design that supported units of student on the life and work of architect Frank Lloyd Write and graphic artist M. C. Escher.

In addition to her work with Arts for Learning, Suchy writes countless grants to supply her classroom with art supplies and bring unique experiences to her students. She also hosts an outreach program that connects the school with the community and recently led the creation of the first outdoor art installation in Decatur Township.

West Newton Elementary principal, Susan Strube, says that “Tracey works tirelessly – days, evenings and weekends, with students, visiting artists and community members to ensure that the arts are alive and well at WNE.”

Arts for Learning is the oldest and largest arts in education organization in the state of Indiana. Arts for Learning serves more than 61, 000 students annually, working to provide quality arts in education programming from professional teaching artists to students throughout Indiana.
