HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT

Junior Hawks

During the month of December, MSD of Decatur Township debuted its Junior Hawks Program, an after-school athletic enhancement program run by Director of Health and Wellness Brad Rose. Both male and female athletes in 5th or 6th grade can sign up to participate twice a week where they will be trained in proper footwork, speed and agility, core strength and correct weight lifting techniques.

The Junior Hawks program aims to provide organized, structured support to its student athletes and focuses on promoting physical activity, preventing injuries and further developing sports skills. With a meal and transportation provided by Decatur, the program is convenient for families and delivers peace of mind to parents that their athletes are receiving quality care and extra training.

The program also helps bridge the gap between high school sports and youth development, which can sometimes lead to injuries due to increased competition without proper training. This option is perfect for families that may not want to commit to club sports, but still wish to provide additional support to their student athlete.

Another unique aspect of this program is its collaboration with the Hawks Helping Hawksinitiative – which provides high school students the opportunity to serve as leaders for the Junior Hawks participants. The high schoolers will work with junior hawks and explain the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy routines.
