Fine Arts Update

Last January, Decatur Central was one of five high schools to earn the opportunity to perform at Indiana’s State Conference held in Fort Wayne. This prestigious spot did not come easily, as the percussion ensemble put in countless hours of practice both in preparation for the audition tape and the performance. Implementing difficult pieces from various programs, the percussionists were very excited and honored for the upcoming event.

The group of fine arts students spent four months perfecting 45 minutes of music to showcase during their performance, where music educators from all over the state would be in attendance. And the students were not the only ones working overtime. When he was not instructing, Band Director Tim Cox was spending his time applying for the Decatur Township Education Foundation (DTEF) grant in effort to secure funding for this very special opportunity. Thanks to his creative thinking, the Decatur Central band was awarded $1,400 in grant money and invested in five additional top-of- the-line tambourines to utilize in their performance.

Even with a snowstorm preceding the big day, the 25 student percussionists went on to exceed expectations and truly represent our school district wonderfully. These talented, young adults will remember this performance for the rest of their lives, along with our entire district!
